چکیده

While MOOCs offer educational data at a new scale, many educators have been alarmed by their high dropout rates. Learners join a course with some motivation to persist for some or all of the course, but various factors, such as attrition or lack of satisfaction, can lead them to disengage or totally drop out. Educational interventions targeting such risk factors can help reduce dropout rates. However, intervention design requires the ability to predict dropout accurately and early enough to allow for timely intervention delivery. In this paper, we present a dropout predictor that uses student activity features to predict which students are at risk high of dropout. The predictor succeeds in red-flagging 40% 50% of dropouts while they are still active. An additional 40% 45% are red-flagged within 14 days of absence from the course.

Massive Open Online Courses Temporal Profiling for Dropout Prediction

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are attracting the attention of people all over the world. Regardless the platform, numbers of registrants for online courses are impressive but in the same time, completion rates are disappointing. Understanding the mechanisms of dropping out based on the learner profile arises as a crucial task in MOOCs, since it will allow intervening at the right moment i...

Modeling Learner Engagement in MOOCs using Probabilistic Soft Logic

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) attract a large number of student registrations, but recent studies have shown that only a small fraction of these students complete their courses. Student dropouts are thus a major deterrent for the growth and success of MOOCs. We believe that understanding student engagement as a course progresses is essential for minimizing dropout rates. Formally defining...

Shared Task on Prediction of Dropout Over Time in Massively Open Online Courses

The shared task on Prediction of Dropout Over Time in MOOCs involves analysis of data from 6 MOOCs offered through Coursera. Data from one MOOC with approximately 30K students was distributed as training data and consisted of discussion forum data (in SQL) and clickstream data (in JSON format). The prediction task was Predicting Attrition Over Time. Based on behavioral data from a week’s worth ...

Big Data Characterization of Learner Behaviour in a Highly Technical MOOC Engineering Course

MOOCs attract a large number of learners with largely unknown diversity in terms of motivation, ability, and goals. To understand more about learners in highly technical engineering MOOCs, this study investigates patterns of learners’ (n = 337) behaviour and performance in the Nanophotonic Modelling MOOC, offered through nanoHUB-U. The authors explored clusters of learner clickstream patterns u...

Gauging MOOC Learners' Adherence to the Designed Learning Path

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platform designs, such as those of edX and Coursera, afford linear learning sequences by building scaffolded knowledge from activity to activity and from week to week. We consider those sequences to be the courses’ designed learning paths. But do learners actually adhere to these designed paths, or do they forge their own ways through the MOOCs? What are the im...
